‘Farming and My Family’: My family have been involved in farming in the county for more than three centuries, farming is in my blood. My family has developed other businesses largely supported by farmers and farming. My great great grandfather founded Harrison and Hetherington’s plc, my great grandfather founded Harrison Lime works at flusco. My father, as well as farming, founded Eden Hall Concrete Products, which developed silos, slurry stores and building materials. Each generation has maintained strong local connections with Cumbria’s farming industries, many, establishing themselves as respected livestock breeders and fatteners.

I was brought up in farming household, and as early as eight years of age I was mucking four hundred weaners out before catching the bus to school each morning. Father and Mother ran a Beef, Pig and Poultry business and this gave me a wonderful grounding that still stands me well to this day.

‘A Breed Apart’: By their very nature, farmers are invariably the great business survivors, able to maximise even the worst of economic downturns and producer prices. Their contribution to a local and national economy often going largely unnoticed or recognised, until such as foot and mouth hits and reveals their  fortitude, and the true extent of farming’s contribution to the prosperity of a county’s or our country’s economy.

Farming develops strong qualities such as Independent Self reliance, forethought and thrift, based around a hard work ethic and a stoic good humour; thus epitomising this counties farming community, I am very proud to consider myself part of this eclectic band of fighters.

I base many of my business principals and decisions on skills directly learnt in farming; I still farm today  in a small way, however, when I’m at work on the land, or among livestock, I’m at home!

‘Why Things had to Change’: Having had a number of very poor experiences whilst addressing my own pension and finances, I became determined to change this industry in my own way
